Osteoarthritis in the facet joints at the back of the lumbar vertebrae, allowing flexion and extension movements of the lower back. These joints are rich in nerve endings and are extremely painful when irritated. This phenomenon occurs when a disc degeneration (pinched, herniated or bulging disc) forces the body to adopt an antalgic posture putting more weight on the facet joints that are too fragile to support it.
