The lumbar disc pinch or lumbar disc disease is the progressive dehydration of the discs which prevents the cells from regenerating correctly as they are "fed" with water, oxygen and essential nutrients by the blood which arrives through the fine blood capillaries stopping at the disc surface. The more the disc is desiccated (desiccation of the disc), the thinner it is and the more there is foraminal stenosis.

A pinched disc can no longer properly play its role as a shock absorber.
