Facet syndrome: Osteoarthritis at the level of the facet joints at the back of the lumbar vertebrae, allowing flexion and extension movements of the lower back. These joints are rich in nerve endings and extremely painful once irritated. This phenomenon occurs when disc degeneration (pinching, herniated disc or bulging) forces the body to adopt an analgesic posture, thus putting more weight on the facet joints that are too fragile to support it.
