TMJ, INFLAMMATION & JAW FUNCTION

Laser therapy and TMJ Laser therapy reduces inflammation This is one of the many laser studies coming out of dental schools showing the benefits of laser therapy (LLLT). This study is interesting because it not only showed that laser therapy (LLLT) was more effective than anti-inflammatories, it also showed reduced pain and improved jaw function. In addition, jaw range of motion in the laser therapy (LLLT) group was significantly improved compared to the NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) group. This is one more study proving the effectiveness of laser therapy (LLLT) in the treatment of TMJ problems with disc displacement. Abstract OBJECTIVES: A randomized double-blind study was conducted to compare the efficacy of superpulsed low-level laser therapy (SLLLT) with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in the treatment of pain caused by temporomandibular joint disorders. METHODS: A total of 99 patients with temporomandibular joint disorders, secondary to disc displacement […]

LASER AND SKIN DISEASE

Laser therapy and skin disease Laser therapy improve healing Many LLLT practitioners ask about treating skin diseases with laser. Here is an interesting study that confirms previous studies showing anecdotal evidence that patients with Oral Lichen Planus may benefit from LLLT. To date, the most commonly used and useful agents for the treatment of Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) are topical corticosteroids. The investigators studied a prospective cohort of 13 patients affected by OLP, who received biostimulation. This study suggests that LLLT could be a possible treatment for patients with unresponsive OLP. These results are a step forward for enhanced management of this quite common condition; however, it would be interesting to see if the results would be the same with a greater number of patients or in a different clinical setting. ARE LASERS AS EFFECTIVE AS SPLINTS FOR TMJ?

Laser therapy and TMJ Laser therapy reduces myofacial pain The present study was designed to compare the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) with occlusal splints in patients with myofascial pain of the jaw and face. Low-level laser therapy LLLT was applied to patients 2 times per week, for a total of 10 sessions. Patients in the control group were instructed to wear splints 24 hours per day for 3 months. Laser therapy as effectice as occlusal splints When the groups were compared with each other, there were no significant differences between the groups! In both groups, muscle pain and jaw range of motion improved significantly. The dentists concluded that LLLT applied twice per week for five weeks was as effective as occlusal splints used 24 hours per day for 3 months!
